As has been an annual tradition, Bonilla will receive $1.19 million from the Mets on July 1 as part of a deferred payment from his contract with the team.
Rather than pay Bonilla $5.9 million for the 2000 season, New York decided to negotiate an annual payout that started in 2000 and doesn’t conclude until 2036.
Why is this relevant to Harper? Bonilla will still be receiving a check from the Mets four years after Harper’s contract ends in Philadelphia.

Bonilla originally signed the contract back in 1992 — months before Harper himself was even born. He’ll now get paid out until Harper is 43 years old. Bonilla himself will be 73 years old.
