Warriors and Klay Thompson reportedly talking contract extension

Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Klay Thompson is slated to become a free agent following the 2018-19 season. That’s when he can earn five-year, $188 million contract in free agency.

As Thompson has continually stated, he has no real interest in free agency and leaving the only NBA team he’s played for. Now, according to The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson, Thompson is engaged in extension talks with the Warriors that would leave a whole heck of a lot of cash on the table.

“According to multiple sources, Thompson and the Warriors have already engaged in discussions regarding a contract extension. If the sides agree this offseason, Thompson would not hit the free-agent market for up to another five years,” the NBA insider reported.

The most Thompson can earn with an extension this summer is $102 million over four seasons. Add in his 2018-19 salary, and it would essentially be a five-year, $121 million deal. Yes, Thompson would be leaving $67 million on the table should he sign said deal.

A four-time All-Star, the 28-year-old Thompson is coming off a 2017-18 regular season that saw him average 20.0 points while shooting at a 44 percent mark from distance.
