Former 5-star recruit Hunter Johnson transferring from Clemson

Hunter Johnson arrived at Clemson with the hope of succeeding Deshaun Watson, but the former prized recruit is now seeking an opportunity elsewhere.

Larry Williams of Tiger Illustrated cited a source who said Johnson plans to transfer out of the program.

The decision is no surprise, and it’s not simply because Kelly Bryant is the returning starter. Clemson signed Trevor Lawrence, the top-rated player in the 2018 class, and the long-haired quarterback had a tremendous spring. Whether this year or next, he’s likely to take over behind center.

Johnson made seven appearances in 2017, completing 21-of-27 attempts for 234 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Since he hasn’t yet used a redshirt season, Johnson will have three years of eligibility at his new school.
