Chris Harris: Veterans are against Broncos using No. 5 pick on QB

Chris Harris

The Denver Broncos are one of the teams atop the upcoming draft that could take a quarterback. Currently they have the No. 5 overall pick in their pocket, and at least one Broncos player, cornerback Chris Harris, is adamantly against using it to draft a quarterback.

Harris went on to say that he’s not the only veteran on the team that isn’t interested in having the team bring in a quarterback with this pick.

This says two things.

First, it says that the Broncos really feel good about Case Keenum, who signed a two-year deal to come in and start under center. He performed admirably last year for the Minnesota Vikings when Sam Bradford was hurt, going 11-3 as a starter while completing 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,547 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Harris’ statements also tell us that Broncos players aren’t exactly enamored with the top rookies in this year’s draft class. And honestly, that’s fair. All of the top guys have some tremendous potential, but there isn’t a “safe” pick among them. They all come with warning labels, to to speak.

Denver has been strongly linked to Baker Mayfield in the past, but John Elway has also made it clear he’s wide open to trading down from No. 5 overall. If he listens to Harris and the players on the roster who share his thoughts, Elway will stay away from taking a quarterback early.
