Richard Sherman: I didn’t abandon anybody

Even though the Seattle Seahawks released Richard Sherman, a small group of fans decided he should be hated because he signed with a different NFC West team. The former All-Pro cornerback is pushing back.

In an interview with Peter King of the MMQB, Sherman said he feels “vengeful” and made sure to put emphasis on the simple truth Seattle parted ways with him.

“I love the fan base to death, and I loved playing there. It was such a great opportunity. I helped the organization get to a great place and stay there. But now it’s like I abandoned them. People are out there burning my jersey. Come on. I’m not the one who let me go. They let me go. I didn’t abandon anybody.”

While the number of fans who react in this extreme manner isn’t high, somebody decided to burn his No. 25 Sherman jersey.

Not only is that a foolish thing anyway, the Seahawks released the cornerback. Sherman didn’t force his way out of Seattle.

Yes, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Yes, that’s a franchise on the rise within the NFC West. The franchises square off twice per season, and Sherman will be on the opposite sideline this year.

But the Seahawks opened themselves up to this possibility when it chose cap savings over Sherman. That was a business decision. And so is Sherman joining the 49ers.
