Iowa State OC Tom Manning joining Colts staff as an assistant

NFL free agent predictions

New Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich might not have any experience in that new role. But he’s doing everything possible to bring on veteran coaches who can help him making the transition to being a head man.

Reich’s newest hirer is the latest example of this. According to multiple media reports, Indianapolis has brought on former Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Manning to be the team’s new tight ends coach.

Why is this so significant?

Manning has spent each of the past three seasons as the Cylones’ offensive coordinator. Over the past two seasons, he’s led one of the most proficient offenses in the nation. Last season alone, Iowa State averaged nearly 30 points and north of 420 yards of offense. Both totals ranked among the best in program history.

Iowa State’s turnaround from bottom feeder in the Big 12 to one of the most exciting teams in the conference coincided with Manning and Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell making there way to Ames from Toledo three seasons ago.

Manning will have some sort of say in the Colts’ offensive scheme this coming season.
