Christopher Johnson, who just took over for Woody Johnson as the New York Jets’ CEO, discussed a plethora of things during a press conference on Wednesday.
Filling in for his brother, who us the current U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Johnson touched on what the future might hold for head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan.
“Believe me, I like winning a lot more than losses, but that’s only part of the equation. The real way to judge this team and the people on it, including me, is are we getting better?” Johnson said, via NFL.com. “It’s not going to come down to games. It’s more about the play on the field. Are we getting better? Losses hurt deeply. I like wins a lot more. But it’s not going to be the sole or even a really important way for me to judge Mike and Todd.”
Everyone and their mother knows that the Jets are tanking this season. Placing any real importance on the team’s record would be unfair to both Bowles and Maccagnan. But as Johnson notes, improvement week-to-week is what should be the most important factor here.
After playing the Buffalo Bills close in a Week 1 loss, the Jets were manhandled by a vastly superior Oakland Raiders squad this past Sunday by the score of 45-20.
After a home game against the Miami Dolphins this week, New York takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns. After that point, we’ll have a better understanding about whether the Jets have improved.
