Jets GM: Christian Hackenberg made ‘good progress’ this offseason

The New York Jets have apparently seen some good things from second-year quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who didn’t play as a rookie.

General manager Mike Maccagnan told reporters Monday that Hackenberg made “good progress” throughout the offseason but noted the real test comes in training camp, per Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

It’s not clear what “good progress” truly means. After all, we’ve heard reports that Hackenberg’s accuracy is still a humongous problem and that Josh McCown has clearly been the best passer this offseason.

The Jets no doubt want Hackenberg to emerge as the clear-cut starter this year. They traded up into the second round to draft him last year, despite the fact that the Penn State product was seen by many as a late-round quarterback.

A team that is clearly tanking, despite what it would have you believe, the Jets have nothing to lose by letting Hackenberg play unless he’s simply a massive embarrassment.

Though, it remains to be seen if head coach Todd Bowles, whose job could be on the line, feels the same way.
