Report: Cubs players wanted President Trump to ‘fire’ Miguel Montero

Chicago Cubs veteran catcher Miguel Montero was designated for assignment earlier this week after he threw ace Jake Arrieta under the bus.

It came following the latest instance of Montero failing to throw out base-stealers from behind home plate. He allowed seven stolen bases against the Washington Nationals, at which point the veteran blamed Arrieta for his defensive inefficiencies.

“It really sucked, because the stolen bases go on me. But when you really look at it, the pitcher doesn’t give me any time, so yeah, ‘Miggy can’t throw anyone out,’ but my pitchers don’t hold anyone on,” Montero said, via ESPN.

Now, according to MLB Network’s Peter Gammons, some members of the Cubs wanted President Donald Trump to use his famous “you’re fired” line on Montero.

Remember, the Cubs visited with 45 at the White House the day after this incident occurred. As of now, Trump calling out former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin at the meeting was the most notable event of the day (more on that here).

Though, just imagine if Trump had actually been able to use his famous line with Montero in attendance. That would have set both the political and sports world ablaze. Unfortunately, it did not happen.
