Report: Browns ‘hopeful’ Robert Griffin III starts this year, unless Cody Kessler ‘gets on a roll’

Robert Griffin III

The Cleveland Browns, winners of no games heading into Week 12, are reportedly “hopeful” that Robert Griffin III will start again this season.

There is a caveat to this, however, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Kessler was ruled out again for Week 12’s game at home against the New York Giants. It’s his second straight missed game as he recovers from a concussion suffered in Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Meanwhile, Griffin III is getting back into the swing of things for the first time since Week 1 when he broke a bone in his shoulder.

RG3 practiced with the Browns this week on a limited basis and isn’t ready to jump back into the thick of things just yet. But the former Offensive Rookie of the Year is raring to go, once he does get cleared for contact, and wants to play again this season.

The Browns really do need to see what they have — if anything — when it comes to Griffin III. He’s not been able to replicate his magical rookie season since tearing up his knee at the end of his rookie campaign. Yet the talent to be great is still evident at times.

The biggest issue facing RG3 is staying healthy and making smart decisions, and there was hope that head coach Hue Jackson would be a good influence.

With that in mind, Cleveland must let RG3 play again this year if he’s healthy enough to do so. It’s the only smart thing to do. Kessler has been rock solid for most of the season when given opportunities, but a franchise quarterback he is not.
