49ers OT Joe Staley jokes about playing until he’s 45 or 50

While we’re seeing more and more NFL players retire young, San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley has a different idea.

In fact, rather than retiring young, Staley, now 32 years old, joked about playing quite a while longer.

One of the top offensive tackles in the NFL, year in and year out, Staley certainly looks to have plenty of gas left in his tank.

Already with nine-plus seasons under his belt, the Central Michigan product has racked up five Pro Bowl appearances and has been recognized as an All Pro a few times as well.

One wonders if Staley sees himself in a 49ers uniform the rest of the way. Given the team’s struggles of late, it wouldn’t be a surprise if a change of scenery might be something he thinks about. He was mentioned as a potential trade piece this season but wasn’t moved before the deadline.

Based on what we’ve seen from the veteran, he might just be committed to the team’s rebuilding efforts. His consistent positive attitude and leadership have been a boon to the beleaguered organization.

Originally drafted by San Francisco in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, he’s locked up through 2019 on his current deal, which was originally a six-year extension worth $44.65 million with $11.46 million guaranteed.
