Report: Jamaal Charles could sit out Week 2

Jamaal Charles

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles could be out another week as he recovers from ACL surgery, per Ed Werder of ESPN.

Head coach Andy Reid has maintained since before training camp that the team would take a conservative approach with bringing Charles back. The same strategy is currently being employed with outside linebacker Justin Houston, who could be out until November (more on that here).

It’s the smart move.

With Spencer Ware looking like a solid interim solution, there is no reason to take any chances with Charles’ long-term health. The third-year back out of LSU totaled 199 yards and scored a touchdown in the team’s opening game against the San Diego Chargers.

Charles will, without a doubt, be the team’s starting back when he returns. His workload will not be tapered back at that time, provided he remains healthy.

There isn’t another running back in the NFL who has matched the per-touch dynamism of Charles the past eight years. He’s averaged 5.5 yards per carry and 8.6 yards per reception.

Ensuring that production will be available down the home stretch is the biggest priority for the Chiefs. Inserting him into the lineup too early would be a foolhardy move that lacks long-term vision.

Thankfully for Chiefs fans, Reid and his staff are being smart about the entire thing.
