Quarterback cupboard bare for Jets following Geno Smith jaw injury

The New York Jets may be on the move to beef up their quarterback roster now that they’ve lost starter Geno Smith for up to 10 weeks. Smith’s absence comes courtesy of now former teammate IK Enemkpali, who broke the quarterback’s jaw during a locker room punch-out.

Albert Breer of NFL Network broke down the dismal free-agent quarterback situation. He reports Matt Flynn, Rex Grossman and even retired Jason Campbell or Kyle Orton as potential options, noting that the Jets won’t likely pursue Michael Vick, who was a complete bust with the team last season.

According to NFL Media Insider Rand Getlin, the Jets have reached out to Grossman who suffered an injury while training. He reportedly needs a few weeks to completely heal.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport spoke on the possibility that Smith’s injury could have the Jets considering bringing Michael Vick back to town, despite Breer’s note.

Obviously, the free agent market is as thin as spring ice if we are hearing the names Grossman, Thigpen and Flynn being chattered around New York. Worse yet is if they were to try to drag a dusty quarterback such as Jason Campbell or Kyle Orton out of their retirement homes.

If the team were to sign one of these veterans, they would intermix into the pool that contains an underwhelming Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Bryce Petty, whom the team reported is not even close to being ready to start.

Sadly, Smith’s injury has the Jets quarterback situation sounding about as unpromising as that of the Buffalo Bills. Tuesday’s chain of events that caused the temporary loss of Smith were certainly not the way new head coach Todd Bowles and new general manager Mike Maccagnan planned it when they woke up this morning.

Regarding Vick, it certainly would be depressing to have him back in town after his disastrous 2014 run with the Jets. And, the other above-mentioned names do not exactly have anyone jumping for joy in New York.
