Mark Sanchez proves he should remain a backup with Philadelphia Eagles

We all know that Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles intend to feature quarterback Sam Bradford as their starter come Week 1. However, Mark Sanchez would have loved to stir the pot with a strong showing on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

After a tepid showing by Sanchez, it’s clear the competition is over.

When given the chance to make a case as to why he should be the starting quarterback for the the Eagles, Sanchez did nothing to impress. He completed only two of his seven passes for 52 yards in limited action. It wasn’t all bad, as he did manage a 34-yard touchdown to rookie wide receiver Nelson Agholor. However, for those who watched the play, the pass to Agholor was ridiculously high and the rookie had to leap high off the ground to catch it.

Sanchez also completely over-threw second-year wideout Jordan Matthews, who was wide open, on a play that easily could have resulted in a touchdown.

After Sanchez was done in the first quarter, second-year quarterback Matt Barkley took over. Barkley finished his day recording 192 yards with one interception on 12 of 20 passing attempts.

Lastly, the Eagles featured the much-anticipated debut of quarterback Tim Tebow who offered a mixed bag of production. He completed of six of 12 passes for 69 yards and obliged his fans with one awesome rushing touchdown that saw him dive into the end zone.

Needless to say, it would appear Bradford’s starting status does not seem to be threatened by Sanchez (or anybody else) at this time. The Eagles kept Bradford sidelined for Sunday’s game in order to preserve his health.
