Receivers of Julio Jones’ caliber don’t come along every year, and the Atlanta Falcons must re-sign their elite wideout following the 2015 NFL season.
Fortunately for the Falcons, though, he’s “on the same page” with owner Arthur Blank and wants to remain with the franchise throughout his career. According to ESPN, Jones said of the impending contract discussions:
“We’re on the same page. I want to be a Falcon for life. I guess he made it clear yesterday that they’re obviously working toward that. All I can control is what I do out here on this field and stay consistent.”
Last season, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound target posted a franchise-record 1,593 receiving yards on a career-best 104 receptions. That stellar performance came after a foot injury ended his 2013 campaign after just five outings.
Per ESPN, first-year coach Dan Quinn praised Jones’ impact on the offense:
“He’s such a unique player, isn’t he? It’s the explosion, the length, the size. He’s got kind of that rare combination where you have speed. Like, some of the big guys aren’t as fast. Some of the big guys aren’t as explosive. Well, he happens to be. That’s why he’s such a unique guy for us.”
Jones has established a tremendous connection with Matt Ryan, a 30-year-old quarterback who is signed through 2018, per Spotrac. The Falcons would be foolish to let Jones even explore free agency, because another franchise will certainly offer a contract similar to what Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas each received this summer.
Without a doubt, Jones is going to get paid. Atlanta ought to make sure it’s the franchise sending the check.
