Atlanta Falcons kicking the tires on Rex Grossman

The Atlanta Falcons currently have quarterback Rex Grossman at team facilities for a workout and physical.

Grossman didn’t play at all last year and hasn’t started a game since 2011, but he does have familiarity with Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s system. They were together in Washington and then again last year during camp in Cleveland.

Falcons head coach confirmed the visit on Tuesday but cautioned the media not to look too much into the visit.

“I think, just like at every position, we’re happy with the two guys we have, but when there’s a time to come work out somebody and see where he’s at or so where the player is at or how we can help improve, we’re going to look at that every chance we get,” Quinn said (h/t ESPN’s Vaughn McClure). “Wouldn’t look too much into that other than that’s another opportunity for us to do that.”

Grossman certainly has the cannon to take advantage of the team’s offensive playmakers, but he also has been known throughout his career as an interception machine. With 47 starts under his belt in 11 seasons, he has thrown 56 touchdowns and 60 interceptions.

At this time, the Falcons have T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree competing for the No. 2 spot behind starter Matt Ryan. Between the two of them, they’ve compiled just five NFL starts. With this in mind, despite what Quinn is saying about not looking too much into the visit, the Falcons may be feeling uncomfortable with their current backup situation.
