After Hiring Jim Tomsula, 49ers Prepared to Clean House

So much for that continuity thing. According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, the San Francisco 49ers are planning to clean house after promoting defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to the head coaching gig.

The report indicates that only running backs coach Tom Rathman will remain with the team.

It’s been a wild day in Santa Clara.

Initial reports on Wednesday indicated that the team was close to hiring Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase to replace Jim Harbaugh. But after a couple hours of those reports hanging around the football world, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team had promoted Tomsula.

San Francisco has since confirmed the hiring and has a press conference slated for Thursday.

Among the coaches that will depart is defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who was considered a candidate for the head coach job before San Francisco ultimately decided on his understudy.

These moves have drawn a ton of criticism around the media world and within San Francisco’s fan base. But it’s important to reserve judgment until Tomsula actually fills out his coaching staff. As of now, all we know is that he’s going to be manning the sideline in 2015.
