Vikings’ QB Matt Cassel Outplays Teddy Bridgewater

In one of the most popular quarterback competitions of the summer, Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater made their preseason debut on Friday night. Cassel completed five of six of his passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, outplaying Bridgewater, who completed just six of his 13 attempts.

While many hope to see Bridgewater start in Week 1 for the Vikings, Cassel proved last night that he’s still putting up a fight. Looking polished under Norv Turner’s offense, Cassel did a fine job in spreading the ball around, completing passes to Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, and a 22-yard connection to tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Bridgewater, who took the field after Cassel, was far less impressive. He tallied just 49 yards, including a fumble in Raiders’ territory. Both quarterbacks are definitely worth observing as the preseason plays out. However, Cassel has been getting the majority of the first-team reps in practice, which would indicate that is likely the direction the Vikings are leaning towards come Week 1 of the regular season.
