49ers’ Colin Kaepernick Comments on Stevie Johnson’s “Unorthodox Style”

New to the San Francisco 49ers this season, wide receiver Stevie Johnson admitted that a disconnect exists between he and quarterback Colin Kaepernick, which the former Buffalo Bills player attributes to his own “unorthodox style“.

While the team has struggled all preseason long, especially in the first-team offense, there is a definite lack of chemistry between Johnson and Kaepernick.

Concurring with Johnson’s assessment, Kaepernick had this to comment regarding Johnson, as reported by the Sacramento Bee (h/t NFL.com).

There are times that he’s going to make a move on a DB, and you have to be ready because he’s also making a move that you have to see. So I think that’s something where it took a little bit longer just to get used to his body language because he had some unorthodox things that he does. But ultimately his separation is there, he’s getting open.

While this may sound a bit unnerving, Coach Jim Harbaugh did report this week that Johnson’s spot on the team’s 53-man roster is secured, despite just two catches for 11 yards in the preseason.

Johnson did say that the chemistry issues have improved, as further reported by NFL.com.

I would say we’re getting close. I can’t say we’re completely on. It’s only been a couple months. It’s getting there. I can’t say we’re clicking right now but we’re getting there.

Since the 49ers’ defense is missing some of its top playmakers to kick off the season, Kaepernick and his wide receivers need to mesh once the regular season gets underway. At least Johnson doesn’t have to worry about the likes of Seattle Seahawks’ cornerback Richard Sherman in his face until late November, so hopefully the chemistry between he and Kaepernick will be flowing by then.
