Colorado Rockies Promote Pitching Prospect Eddie Butler

The idea of MLB teams having prospects is so they can bring them up when a need arises, or to give the team a spark.

The Colorado Rockies are definitely in need of said spark, as they’ve lost five games in a row, sitting third in the National League West division and trailing the San Francisco Giants by 8.5 games.

The Rockies have decided it’s time to promote pitching prospect Eddie Butler to the Majors. The right-handed pitcher has a 2.49 ERA in 11 starts for Double-A Tulsa this season.

He has struck out 40 batters and walked 19, while allowing three home runs in 68.2 innings pitched. He has a 1.18 WHIP and his SO/9 is 5.2.

Butler is set to make his season debut on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will take the rotation spot that was previously occupied by Franklin Morales, says the Denver Post.  Morales will move to the bullpen, as he has an ERA of 6.03, his WHIP is 1.58 and allowed 13 home runs in 62.2 innings pitched.

Butler is seen as the future of the rotation for the Rockies, and it seems that the future is now.

“It could be a shot in the arm for us,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Tuesday night, after the Rockies’ season-high losing streak extended to five games with a 4-2 home loss to the D-backs. “He’s a talented kid. I’ve heard a lot about him.”
