Report: Jay Cutler now ‘heavily leaning’ toward staying retired

Jay Cutler

The on again, off again saga of Jay Cutler to the Miami Dolphins could very well be off again. According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, Cutler is now “heavily leaning” toward staying retired.

This report comes amid suggestions that the two sides were closing in on a contract.

Miami’s interest in Cutler is solely due to the fact that starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill could potentially be lost for the season due to what looked like a serious knee injury he suffered in practice on Thursday.

In turn, Cutler has reportedly expressed interest in coming out of his short retirement to play for former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase in Miami.

As Darlington notes, the Dolphins were the only situation that Cutler would have even considered after taking a gig with Fox to be an in-game analyst this upcoming season.

This could potentially set up a scenario where the Dolphins have to either ride Matt Moore throughout the 2017 season or kick the tires on the embattled Colin Kaepernick.

It’s most definitely something to keep an eye on over the coming days.
