Jamaal Charles cleared for everything, but Broncos want him ‘fresh’ for season

Could the Denver Broncos release Jamaal Charles before training camp is over?

It’s been reported throughout the offseason that Jamaal Charles might not make the final Denver Broncos roster. However, comments made by head coach Vance Joseph Wednesday might indicate this isn’t how the team views the veteran back.

Charles has been cleared for all camp drills, Joseph said. But they’ll break him in slowly, because the Broncos want him fresh for the season.

That there’s been some skepticism about Charles’ viability for the season is hardly surprising. He has missed most of the past two seasons with knee injuries and is already past the dreaded age of 30, which has been a death knell for so many NFL running backs.

Though, the running back still has plenty of prove in is own mind, which he made clear earlier this season.

If Charles can get back to full health and can stay healthy, then there’s no doubt Denver’s offense will benefit. He is one of the most explosive running backs the NFL has seen since Barry Sanders, averaging 5.5 yards throughout his NFL career, which has spanned nine seasons. In those nine campaigns, all spent with the Kansas City Chiefs, Charles has totaled 9,717 yards and 63 touchdowns.
