Rockies place SS Trevor Story on DL with shoulder injury

While the first part of Colorado Rockies season has been a pleasant surprise, they were dealt some bad news on Thursday. As Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reported, the first-place Rockies placed second-year shortstop Trevor Story was placed on the disabled list.

Saunders also said that “Story injured the shoulder in an at-bat in Tuesday night’s game against the Cubs.”

This is yet another bump in the road for Story, who’s struggled for most of 2016. He has a respectable six home runs, but is slashing at .180/.289/.396, all well down from his 2016 totals (.272/.341/.567, 27 home runs) which earned him fourth place in NL Rookie of the Year voting.

For Colorado, this injury has to be slightly concerning. Rockies players have historically struggled to stay healthy for full seasons. One notable example of that was the man Story replaced at shortstop, Troy Tulowitzki.

As brilliant as Story’s rookie season was, it was confined to only 97 games. Certainly, another DL stint is not what anyone in the Colorado organization wants to see from a potential cornerstone of the franchise.
