HOFer Cris Carter calls out Odell Beckham Jr.

With Odell Beckham Jr deciding against taking part in voluntary OTAs this past week, the New York Giants’ receiver has faced a ton of criticism from others around the NFL.

Heck, Giants head coach Ben McAdoo seemed to throw some shade Beckham Jr’s way earlier in the week (more on that here).

We can now add Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter to the list of people questioning OBJ himself. Though, Carter’s criticism comes from the receiver’s struggles in the Giants’ blowout loss against the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs this past January. For Carter, it seems to be all about OBJ being too hyped.

“He (Beckham Jr.) realized he was too hyped for the game and put too much pressure on himself after he dropped the first pass. That created anxiety. He didn’t play well,” Carter said, via the NY Daily News. “He thought he was going to have a great game against Green Bay and destroy them. He tried to do too much after the first drop and that’s when the anxiety came … What about all the (Giants) who didn’t go to Miami and played like horse manure?”

The end of that quote is interesting in that he seems to be defending OBJ to an extent. Remember, a lot was made about the receiver and other members of the Giants hanging out in Miami in the lead up to the playoff game.

Beckham Jr. would go on to catch just 4-of-11 targets for 28 yards with multiple drops in the 38-13 loss to Green Bay.

Since then, he’s been on the receiving end of criticism for a perceived lack of interest in working out with the Giants. Whether that’s actually the case remains to be seen. What we do know is that OBJ seems to be at odds with the Giants’ brass, which could potentially lead to an early divorce between the two sides (more on that here).

It will surely be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming months and when the 2017 regular season comes calling.
