Chargers preparing to start season without Joey Bosa

Joey Bosa has a lot to prove heading into NFL Week 5

With first round pick Joey Bosa still unsigned, coach Mike McCoy and the San Diego Chargers are moving forward. The Chargers will be ready for Bosa if and when he arrives, but the coach is more focused on the guys in camp and is preparing to start the season without him.

“We’ll have a plan for him whenever he’s here,” McCoy said, per Eric D. Williams, ESPN. “We’ve talked about it over time, from the very beginning of camp. So we’ve got a plan for when he’s in the building. But I’m very pleased with the other 89 guys in camp at this point in time.”

Bosa’s holdout is now nearly a month long. Rookies were supposed to report 25 days ago.

The battle between the third overall pick and the team has been prolonged. Bosa’s mother has she that she wished her family would have just “pulled an Eli Manning.”

Tight end Antonio gates made it clear that he wanted Bosa in camp. The Ohio State product is listed as the fourth string defensive end, behind Darius Philon, Tenny Palepoi, and fellow rookie Zamir Carlis.

Bosa was selected third overall in April’s NFL Draft, behind only quarterbacks Jared Goff and Carson Wentz.
