Todd Bowles looking for innovative ways to control Jets’ locker room

Todd Bowles

In order to help prevent the similar mayhem that surrounded the New York Jets last summer, head coach Todd Bowles is taking preventative measures.

His solution will consist of a selection of seasoned veterans to lead the locker room.

“Last year, I pretty much had to take the leadership role,” Bowles said per Dom Cosentino of NJ.com. “I think this year, we’ve got veteran players that are ready to take a leadership role, or even more so, and have the team follow them instead of following me.”

At this time, Bowles has not specifically named who will be the supervising leaders, but guys such as center Nick Mangold, cornerback Darrelle Revis and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson were floated in the report.

Bowles intends to meet with his so-called “senior council” once per week to check in on the team’s status.

During Bowles’ first year as the Jets’ coach, he was dealt quite the combination of issues during training camp. There was that infamous locker room brawl that resulted in quarterback Geno Smith’s busted jaw (more on that here).

A couple of players also were suspended for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. One of those guys was defensive end Sheldon Richardson, who also was arrested for speeding while driving with a weapon and a child in the car.

Last season, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was a respected locker room leader. Obviously, the Jets are without his presence now and definitely could use some established players to help unite the locker room.
