Report: Sheldon Richardson avoids jail time for arrest last summer

Sheldon Richardson

Sheldon Richardson will not face jail time for his arrest in July of 2015 before training camp in which he was popped going 143 miles per hour with a 12-year-old in the car.

This news comes by way of Rich Cimini of ESPN, who reports the New York Jets defensive end pled guilty “to resisting arrest, speeding and running a red light in suburban St. Louis, but he cut a deal with prosecutors that allows him to escape jail time.” He was also “sentenced to 100 hours of community service and fined $1,050. He received a two-year suspended sentence and bench probation, per his lawyer.”

As noted by Cimini, there is a chance Richardson will still face NFL discipline. It must be remembered that he was already facing a four-game suspension before his arrest. This means discipline is almost guaranteed for this incident, which falls under the personal code policy of the league, and it might be severe.

During the arrest in July, police say they smelled marijuana in the car, though he was never charged on that count. They also had to get him out of the car at gunpoint because he appeared to be reaching for something and did find a loaded gun in the car.

Next up is likely a sentence by Roger Goodell, and inevitably an appeal afterwards.
