The Dallas Cowboys are quarterback hunting as we head towards the 2016 NFL Draft. Benjamin Allbright of AM 1340 in Denver is reporting that they’re interested in moving up to the No. 1 spot and drafting North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz.
Allbright has also reported that the Cowboys are looking at Michigan State’s Connor Cook as a possible second round pick, or North Carolina State’s Jacoby Brissett in the later rounds.
It wouldn’t make a lot of sense Dallas to draft a quarterback in the first round. Using their first pick on a quarterback would be nonsensical, and trading up for the first pick would be downright stupid.
Tony Romo is still on the roster. While his career might be winding down, it’s hard to say that Romo is done and needs to be replaced. Logically speaking, it would be more sensible to follow the route of the Denver Broncos with Brock Osweiler or New England Patriots with Jimmy Garoppolo, who drafted the “quarterback of the future” after the first round.
If Carson Wentz was seen as a “can’t miss” prospect — like Andrew Luck in 2012 — this might make more sense. But while Wentz might be a fine quarterback, none of the signal callers in this draft have that label. The Cowboys would be better served to fill other long-term needs with their first pick and find Romo’s replacement later.
If the Cowboys are indeed “exploring several options,” the last one they should consider would be using their first pick (or trading up) on a quarterback. It would cost the team a lot of money, and more importantly wouldn’t likely help the team be more competitive in the NFC East.
