Rex Ryan has ‘no idea’ how to defend Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett

Opposing defenses already had a difficult time shutting down New England Patriots jumbo-sized tight end Rob Gronkowski. Now, they’ll be faced with double-trouble now that tight end Martellus Bennett is in the mix.

When discussing how the Bills will defend the Patriots dual tight end threat, head coach Rex Ryan expressed dismay at prospect, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.

“I have no idea. I just think it’s unusual to have two guys that are like 6-(foot)-7 and can run, catch, block. So, yeah, it’s going to be a major challenge. There’s no doubt about that. It’s scary when you look at them. Those are two huge guys. How we’re going to defend them, I don’t know.”

Both tight ends excellent blockers and receivers. Both can score touchdowns on any given play. Combine that with Tom Brady’s accuracy and it makes quite the recipe for disaster for opposing defenses.

Brady connected with Gronk for 72 catches resulting in 1,176 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2015. Bennett had a down year last season in Chicago due to some injuries. Though in 2014, he posted career-highs with 90 receptions, 916 yards and six touchdowns.

The Patriots also acquired another potentially powerful weapon on offense, wide receiver Chris Hogan, in a trade with the Bills. Hogan recorded 36 receptions for 450 yards and two touchdowns last season.

While the Patriots continue building their offensive army, Ryan perhaps needs to collaborate with his assistant head coach, brother Rob, on a plan of attack.
