Report: Sam Bradford and Philadelphia Eagles hope to sign short-term extension

Sam Bradford and the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly trying to hammer out a short-term extension before the 2015 NFL season.

The oft-injured quarterback has made a successful return to the practice field after recovering from a knee injury, and he’s apparently made quite an impression already working exclusively with the first-string offense the past couple of practices.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports the Eagles are interested in locking him up past the 2015 season as a result to control his rights, though he mentions a long-term extension is likely not in the cards, per his sources.

This is a smart move by Philadelphia.

Chip Kelly believes Bradford is the perfect quarterback for his up-tempo system, and the team expects Bradford to be fully good to go after he suffered his second ACL injury. By signing him to an extension, the Eagles are potentially avoiding a messy contract negotiation next season, should Bradford perform well in 2015.

Of course, we’re pretty sure Mark Sanchez isn’t going to be pleased with these developments. He was reportedly told back in the spring that the Eagles would be holding “an open competition” for the starting quarterback gig, but since Bradford’s return that hasn’t been the case.

The Eagles appear to be all-in on Bradford, and only time will tell if Kelly’s decision will pay dividends this upcoming season or if it will blow up in his face.
