Baltimore Ravens safety Matt Elam may be lost for the season after suffering what could be a torn biceps during practice on Saturday.
This unfortunate news was reported by Clifton Brown of CSN Baltimore, who notes Elam is scheduled for an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
“The worst-case scenario for Elam would be a tear that required surgery, which would likely end his season. However, a partial tear would allow Elam to return much sooner, perhaps in time for Week 1.”
Baltimore certainly hopes Elam can return this year. The Ravens already feature a secondary that has questionable depth, and general manager Ozzie Newsome had recently made no bones about the team’s desperate need for Elam to show up big.
“Matt Elam has to be a better football player for us next year,” Newsome said during the Ravens’ state of the team press conference in February (h/t Baltimore Sun). “He has to be.”
Elam has not lived up to the high expectations Newsome and the Ravens had for him when he was selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In 26 starts, he hasn’t exhibited the playmaking abilities we saw from him during his standout college days at Florida, logging just one interception and one forced fumble.
It now appears he may have to deal with further disappointment after suffering this injury, which could seal his fate as it pertains to his career in Baltimore.
