In his last season with the Kansas City Chiefs, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was not responsible for one single touchdown scored by the team’s offense. Bowe claims that the lack of red zone targets from quarterback Alex Smith was the reason he went scoreless last season.
“I didn’t get one shot in the end zone,” the new Cleveland Browns receiver said, via Northeast Ohio Media Group. “I think it’s in Ripley’s Believe It or Not…”
We’re not sure if Bowe’s unfortunate season actually made the record books, but his analysis certainly makes the sad fact look prettier.
Talking up his new team and quarterback Josh McCown, Bowe is enthusiastic about the upcoming season:
“It’s going to be exciting, especially with a new uniform, a new city, new everything, I’m going to feel good. With Alex Mack and Joe Thomas, we’re going to have a lot of time to hit that deep ball even in the red zone. I never had a quarterback like Josh that was that tall and could see the mismatch and really go to it. He’s got my confidence level high right now.”
While Bowe indirectly blames Smith for his lack of production, he doesn’t admit that film shows he had trouble separating from cornerbacks to get open last season. Bowe totaled only 60 catches for 754 yards in 2014. The last time Bowe achieved 1,000-plus yards in a season was in 2011. Since then, he’s averaging less than 800 receiving yards and has scored a total of eight touchdowns.
It’s nice that Bowe is excited about working with McCown. However, it would be unrealistic to expect the same type of success between the Bowe and McCown that occurred when the quarterback was under center in Chicago with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery at his disposal.
As for Bowe’s comment about never playing with a quarterback as tall as McCown, we must note that both McCown and Smith both stand 6-foot-4.
Perhaps McCown wears taller cleats.
