Report: “No Chance” Seahawks, Russell Wilson Agree to Extension Soon

There seems to be a ton of chatter around the NFL world that the Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson aren’t anywhere near close to coming to an agreement on a long-term deal. Wilson wants a contract structured like what Jay Cutler received from the Chicago Bears in January of 2014. Meanwhile, Seattle doesn’t seem to be willing to meet that demand.

Fresh off his agent sending a 16-page position paper to the brass in Seattle, it appears that Wilson is ready to play hardball. Willing to play out the final year of his contract, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback isn’t going to agree to an extension for expediency sake.

Now comes this report from Fox Sports NFL insider Mike Garafolo indicating that there’s “no chance” the two sides come to terms on an extension in the near future:

When asked if he sees a long-term deal getting done any time soon, the insider responded:

“No chance…absolutely no chance. I get the sense these sides are very far apart right now.”

Those are some strong words from a scribe that has a solid understanding of the goings on around the NFL world. Garafolo went on to indicate that he doesn’t believe the Seahawks are “low-balling” Wilson. Instead, they are willing to pay him in the range of what Cam Newton received from the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately for the brass in Seattle, that hasn’t been good enough.

Newton signed a five-year, $103.8 million contract with $60 million guaranteed earlier this month. As we indicated then, Wilson’s market promises to be a tad bit higher than what Newton received.

This latest report by Garafolo seems to indicate that the two-time defending NFC champs will have to go much higher than that deal in order to lock Wilson up long-term. This could end up causing a major contract stalemate, especially if Wilson isn’t locked up prior to the start of the 2015 regular season.
