Report: Philip Rivers and Chargers Making “a Little Progress” on a Contract Extension

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers status with the team has been a talking point ever since the free agency period began. Trade rumors surfaced in the months leading up to the draft. Was San Diego really going to move on from its franchise quarterback?

As the draft approached and San Diego added running back Melvin Gordon from Wisconsin, it became apparent that the Chargers were doubling down on Rivers.

This is further solidified by the fact that the Chargers and Rivers have made “a little progress” regarding an extension, as reported by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport further reported that the Chargers are optimistic that a new deal will be worked out, and that Rivers will end his career in Southern California.

Rivers is currently under a six-year, $98.1 million contract that takes him through the 2015 season. If he agrees to an extension, it means he would retire a Charger—a Charger who may be playing in Los Angeles when that time comes.
