San Francisco 49ers Sign LB Philip Wheeler Before 2015 NFL Draft

Never accuse San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke of boxing himself in when it comes to the NFL draft.

Just hours before the first round kicks off on Thursday night, the 49ers announced the signing of linebacker Philip Wheeler, previously of the Indianapolis Colts,  Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins:

Wheeler is an experienced veteran who has started 60 games in his seven-year career. He came on particularly strong during his 2012 campaign in Oakland, earning himself a respectable five-year deal with the Dolphins worth $26 million.

After another solid season in 2013, he lost his starting spot in 2014, prompting the Dolphins to cut ties with him during this current offseason.

The move by Baalke to bring Wheeler aboard on draft day is savvy after the 49ers lost Patrick Willis and Chris Borland this winter.

The ever-silent general manager always strives to give himself the best opportunity to select players of the highest value during the draft. Bolstering his linebacking corps allows Baalke to absolutely stick to his board, regardless of need.

Wheeler is a capable player who has shown flashes of excellence during his career. He will certainly fight for a starting spot playing next to NaVorro Bowman during the 2015 campaign. He’ll have to beat out veterans Michael Wilhoite, Nick Moody and newly-aquired Desmond Bishop to earn the right.
