New MLB Commissioner Indicates a Return to Montreal is Possible

In the few short days since he took the reigns as MLB’s Commissioner, Rob Manfred has excited the baseball world with a look into what his term as the league’s top executive may bring in the future.

One of Manfred’s most interesting comments came in an interview with the New York Times.

“Look, I think Montreal helped itself as a candidate for Major League Baseball with the Toronto games that they had up there last year.” Manfred said. “It’s hard to miss how many people showed up for those exhibition games. It was a strong showing. Montreal’s a great city. I think with the right set of circumstances and the right facility, it’s possible.”

The Toronto Blue Jays played two games in Montreal last year. That set against the New York Mets drew a whopping 95,000 people. Toronto will also play host to the Cincinnati Reds in a series of spring training games scheduled to take place in Montreal this upcoming April.

While this does sound like a great bit of news for baseball fans up north, there are no immediate plans expand and relocation doesn’t seem to be in the cards right now. At the very least, this gives us a glimpse into what Manfred is thinking behind the commissioner’s desk.
