Report: Diamondbacks Sign Yasmany Tomas

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com is reporting that the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed Cuban star Yasmany Tomas to a six-year, $68.5 million contract.

Tomas, a 24-year-old outfielder, escaped Cuba back in June before establishing residence in Haiti and eventually being allowed to enter the United States.

He’s seen as a five-tool prospect with a nice amount of power. Tomas hit 30 homers and drove in 104 runs in 205 games while playing professionally in Cuba.

A whole host of teams had shown interest in Tomas, including the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox.

Tomas figures to play one of the two corner outfield positions in Arizona. His contract is also said to have an opt-out clause, though it’s unsure of when he can exercise it.
