Report: Warriors Sign Klay Thompson to $70 Million Extension

This appears to have come out of nowhere. Star shooting guard Klay Thompson has reportedly agreed to a four-year, $70 million extension with the Golden State Warriors.

According to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports, the extension was agreed to after the Sacramento Kings made a late push to acquire Thompson from the Warriors.

The $70 million extension comes with a no opt-out clause for both sides, which is an indication that Thompson will play out the duration of the deal. At an average of $17.5 million per season, Thompson will be making nearly $7 million more per season than Stephen Curry when his rookie deal expires following the 2014-2015 season.

That could lead to a bit of drama between the Splash Brothers, especially considering Curry is the one that’s currently seen as the face of the franchise and a potential NBA MVP candidate.

Thompson, who helped Team USA win Gold in the FIBA World Cup this summer, averaged 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for an up-and-coming Warriors team last season. He was involved in trade talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love during the offseason. But nothing ever materialized there, as the Warriors didn’t want to move one half of their star-studded backcourt tandem.
