Twins Prospect Byron Buxton Won’t Play Until May

Twins Prospect Byron Buxton

The Minnesota Twins got more bad news today – besides having Ron Gardenhire as their manager and an aging & unproductive Joe Mauer bloating their payroll –  Twins prospect Byron Buxton won’t see any minor league action until sometime in May.

With the Twins only able to compete against the Houston Astros and other American League Central teams these days, the news is depressing for a Twins fan base that set a new record during the April 10th game – a 6 – 1 loss – for the smallest crowd ever at five-year-old Target Field.

The entire scoop from MLB.com

The Twins are being cautious with Buxton, as they don’t want the injury to linger throughout the season. So it remains unlikely he’ll be ready to play at New Britain before May 1.

“He’ll be able to start doing some stuff later this week or early next week, but it’ll take some time,” Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said. “They’re not going to push him. We know that. So there’s no set timetable. A lot of it will be how he feels and reacts once we ease back into things.”

With Twins ownership now seemingly profit-taking to make up for their initial investment into baseball’s top-rated ballpark, allowing the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball by MLB.com to spend a full-year in the minors will prevent the dreaded service time from beginning to accrue.
