Tampa Bay Rays ‘widely expected’ to trade ace starting pitcher this offseason, but a deal hinges on certain factors

When healthy, few pitchers are better than the Tampa Bay Rays’ Tyler Glasnow. The issue is the 6-foot-8 right-handed pitcher has never pitched more than 120 innings in a single season. Yet, still, the effectiveness of the eighth-year pro can’t be ignored, as not many starting pitchers can say they have been in MLB for eight seasons, yet still have an ERA of 3.89.

Even though he doesn’t have the flashy accolades, Glasnow pitches at an All-Star level. That’s why it’s a bit surprising to hear that the Rays are “widely expected” to trade the 30-year-old this offseason, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Yet, Glasnow only has one year left with the Rays before entering free agency next offseason. This is why many around baseball view him as an ideal trade candidate. However, just because Glasnow is likely on the move, it doesn’t necessarily mean a trade could happen in the next few days or even weeks.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Paul Morosi, the Rays are indeed having “a lot of trade dialogue,” but discussions are still only in the “preliminary stage.”

Glasnow trade discussions are expected to pick up once some of the top free agent pitchers are signed, once teams realize they may have to make other plans to improve their starting rotation this offseason. No matter what, Glasnow will likely be one of the more enticing options available this offseason, even if he may only last one year with his new club before entering free agency in 2024.
