The Denver Broncos didn’t get the results they were hoping for after trading for Russell Wilson. In fact, coach Sean Payton seemingly grew tired of working with the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, deciding to bench him after Wilson refused to adjust his contract in case of injury.

When Wilson was benched, it was assumed his days in Denver were numbered. But with Wilson under contract through the 2028 season, the Broncos may not have an easy time moving on from their $242 million QB. Yet, we should have an answer on that front soon enough.

While the expectation is that the Denver Broncos will find a way to move on from Russell Wilson, either via trade or release, that’s no guarantee. Naturally, everyone who follows the Broncos closely wants to know who will be quarterbacking the team next season.

Will it be Wilson? Or is he headed for ‘greener’ pastures?

According to Broncos head coach Sean Payton, we’ll learn Wilson’s fate soon enough.

“We look closely at where the pieces are. Here are the ‘musts, needs and wants’ and when you asked the question about Russ, that factors in. Is it possible for us to do ‘this, this and this’ or not? I think that decision will be sooner than later. He’ll know sooner than later.”

If the Broncos do move on from Wilson, they’ll have to spring into action to find another QB who can take Denver further than they got during the past two seasons.

With Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs claiming the AFC West division title every year, in addition to the expected improvement from Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers and Antonio Pierce’s Las Vegas Raiders, the Broncos have a tough road ahead.
