Washington offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland has decided to opt out of this year’s NFL draft because of an ankle injury, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

Kirkland made his decision after learning that the ankle injury was more serious than initially believed. He is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday, ESPN reported.

The 6-foot-7, 310-pounder intends to petition the NCAA to play next season before turning his attention to the 2023 NFL draft.

Kirkland made the All-Pac-12 first team in each of the past two seasons and was considered to be one of the top offensive linemen in this year’s draft class. He started 10 games at left tackle this season and missed two games due to injury.
