Sarah Gelles, who began her career as a baseball operations intern with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009, is returning to the team as an assistant general manager, per The Athletic.

Gelles will join the Pirates’ other assistant general managers, Steve Sanders and Kevan Graves, on general manager Ben Cherington’s staff.

Pittsburgh’s baseball operations department also includes Caitlyn Callahan, who became the team’s first uniformed female coach in 2022.

Gelles has more than a decade of major league front office experience, having spent the last five years with the Houston Astros, who named her the research and development department director in 2019.

During Gelles’ tenure with the Astros, the organization won four division titles, two American League pennants and one World Series.

Prior to joining the Astros, Gelles worked with the Baltimore Orioles from 2011-18, serving as the coordinator of baseball analytics from 2012-14 before a promotion to director of baseball analytics.

In her last three years with Baltimore, Gelles served as director of analytics and major league contracts. That position included major league roster management and assisting then-general manager Dan Duquette with various aspects of baseball operations.
