Report: Jets to trade or release Eric Decker this week

Eric Decker

In news that can’t be considered too surprising, the New York Jets will reportedly trade or release veteran wide receiver Eric Decker this week.

Earlier on Tuesday, Jets head coach Todd Bowles would not commit to a roster spot for Decker in 2017. That came on the heels of the team announcing the release of fellow veteran, linebacker Davis Harris.

With the Jets going in a full-scale rebuild, there’s no real reason to keep the 30-year-old Decker around at a $8.8 million cap hit for the 2017 season.

Whether the Jets trade or release Decker remains to be seen. It was previously noted that his roster spot could be in jeopardy, but the team has been unable to find someone interested in trading for the veteran. Decker is coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him miss all but three games after suffering both a hip and shoulder injury.

It will surely be interesting to see what happens over the next couple days. But for now, it appears that Decker’s career in New Jersey will last all of two seasons.
