The Chicago Red Stars named Lorne Donaldson as the new head coach of the NWSL club on Wednesday.

Donaldson, 68, coached the Jamaican Women’s National Team for the past two years.

At the 2023 Women’s World Cup, his Reggae Girlz became the first Caribbean nation to reach the Round of 16.

“Lorne has a proven track record as a winning coach and an advocate for his athletes. We believe he has the experience and leadership skills to elevate our talented group of players,” Red Stars chairperson Laura Ricketts said. “As the president of the elite youth club Real Colorado, Lorne also has deep ties to some of the finest U.S. players.”

Through his position at Real Colorado, Donaldson helped to develop such NWSL stars as Janine Beckie (Portland Thorns), Jaelin Howell (Racing Louisville), Sophia Smith (Thorns) and Mallory Swanson (Red Stars).

“Lorne is the right person to lead us next season,” Red Stars president Karen Leetzow said. “Lorne’s experiences as a decorated player and as a winning coach on the youth, professional and international level will be invaluable for our players, coaches and staff who have the opportunity to learn from him.”

Donaldson will join the Red Stars ahead of the Jan. 12 NWSL Draft. The 2024 season begins on March 16.

He replaces Chris Petrucelli, who was fired with one match remaining in Chicago’s season. The Red Stars finished last in the 12-team league with a 7-3-12 record.
