Philadelphia Eagles hire Sean Desai as new defensive coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles have turned over no stone in an effort to replace defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.

With multiple candidates, both internal and external, the defending NFC champions have officially come to a decision.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll announced from the podium at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday that associate head coach Sean Desai is leaving the Pacific Northwest to become the Eagles’ next defensive coordinator.

It’s interesting that Carroll would make the announcement of Desai’s departure. However, the highly respected assistant had been seen as a favorite in both Philadelphia and with the Cleveland Browns. He now heads to an Eagles team that registered 70 sacks en route to winning the NFC a season ago.

The 39-year-old Sean Desai comes from the Vic Fangio coaching tree. He began his NFL career as an assistant under the then-Chicago Bears defensive coordinator. Once Fangio departed to become the Denver Broncos head coach, Desai took over to coordinate Chicago’s defense for one season. He was fired after just one season despite leading a unit that ranked No. 6 in yards allowed.

Ultimately, the Boston University grad landed with Carroll and Seattle ahead of last season as the Seahawks’ associate head coach and defensive assistant. He’ll now be calling the shots with the Philadelphia Eagles after Gannon departed to be the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach.
