One of the greatest hitting infielders in New York Yankees history, Robinson Cano, is not ready to give up playing professional baseball and has now decided to take his talents to a league south of the border.

Over his first nine seasons in MLB Robinson Cano evolved into a lethal hitter from a position not known for middle-of-the-order players. However, in that time the second baseman hit 25 or more home runs five times, 100 or more RBIs on three occasions, and earned All-Star honors in five seasons.

Even when he left the Pinstripes for a massive free agent deal with the Seattle Mariners he went to the All-Star game three more times and smacked over 30 homers in four of his five seasons in Washington. However, like all great players his skills diminished and over his last three seasons in the league he was a shell of his former self.

That should be enough to call it a career since he earned over $250 million during his 17 years in MLB. Yet, the 41-year-old is unwilling to give up the ghost and has taken his show on the road around the world. In 2023 and earlier this year he played for Estrellas in the Dominican League and then for the DR team during the Caribbean Series.

Late last year he also took part in a set of exhibition games for the Middle East-based Baseball United league. Now, the eight-time All-Star has picked his new home for the next few months. On Friday, Enrique Rojas of ESPN reported that the former New York Yankees superstar will be playing for the Diablos Rojos of the Mexican League.

Cano has every right to continue his career in whatever way he chooses, but it is sad that the man who played for both the New York Yankees and New York Mets during his career isn’t ready to enjoy the hundreds of millions he earned as a retired player, or that he doesn’t want to transition into a role as a coach in the game.

Cano’s last season in MLB was spent playing for the Mets, Braves, and Padres in 2022.
