The Seattle Mariners scored three times in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the visiting Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Saturday in the third game of a four-game series.
Julio Rodriguez singled with one out in the 10th to score Josh Rojas from third with the game-winning run.
The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead when a Pablo Reyes single to right drove in Ceddanne Rafaela in the top of the 10th, and they extended their lead to 3-1 on an RBI single by Masataka Yoshida that drove in Reece McGuire with two outs in the inning.
Seattle’s Luke Raley drove in Ty France with a single to make it a 3-2 game, and Rojas’ single plus an error on right fielder Wilyer Abreu put runners on second and third with one out. Raley scored on a fielder’s choice — J.P. Crawford’s grounder to second — before Rodriguez came up with the game-winning hit against Justin Slaten.
Joely Rodriguez (0-1), who allowed all three runs in the 10th, took the loss. Tayler Saucedo (1-0) recorded the final out in the top of the 10th to earn the win. Kutter Crawford pitched the first six innings for Boston. He allowed an unearned run on three hits, walked one and struck out seven. Boston’s starting pitchers have surrendered four runs in 17 innings, with one walk and 19 strikeouts this season.
Orioles 13, Angels 4
Baltimore broke open a close game with a nine-run sixth inning and cruised to a rout of visiting Los Angeles.
The Orioles had two walks and six hits in the sixth, including a three-run homer by Anthony Santander and a two-run triple by Gunnar Henderson. Henderson finished with three hits and was a double shy of the cycle. Starter Grayson Rodriguez (1-0) allowed one run and four hits in six innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel had an infield single in the ninth inning, extending his streak of reaching base by hit or walk to 31 games, the third longest streak to begin a major league career since 1900. Alvin Davis holds the record (47 in 1984) and Truck Hannah is next (38 in 1918).
Braves 12, Phillies 4
Atlanta scored seven runs over the first three innings and collected 19 hits to run away from the host Philadelphia despite starting pitcher Max Fried failing to get out of the first inning.
Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, Michael Harris II, Orlando Arcia and Jarred Kelenic each had three hits in the win. Albies also batted in three runs, while Marcell Ozuna finished with three RBIs, as well.
Fried was charged with three runs after giving up two hits and walking three while getting only two out before being pulled. Reliever Jesse Chavez replaced Fried and picked up the win (1-0) after giving up one run over three innings. Phillies starter Aaron Nola (0-1) lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing 12 hits and seven runs in his season debut.
Yankees 5, Astros 3
Oswaldo Cabrera and Juan Soto combined to lead a late-inning charge for a second consecutive game as New York turned a three-run seventh inning into a victory over host Houston at Minute Maid Park.
After combining for seven hits and four RBIs in the Yankees’ comeback win on Friday, Cabrera and Soto homered in the seventh inning off Astros reliever Bryan Abreu (0-1) to erase a two-run deficit and set the table for the Yankees to complete the four-game road series sweep Sunday.
Right-hander Marcus Stroman (1-0) worked six strong innings in his Yankees debut, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Twins 5, Royals 1
Christian Vazquez sparked a four-run, ninth-inning rally with a tiebreaking single to help Minnesota top host Kansas City.
With one out, Alex Kirilloff’s sacrifice fly and Byron Buxton’s two-run double capped the four-run inning against Will Smith (0-1). Griffin Jax (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory.
The Twins’ bullpen allowed two hits over the final 3 2/3 innings while Royals relievers surrendered five hits, five runs and two walks in three innings. Minnesota starter Joe Ryan was perfect through three innings, with Bobby Witt Jr.’s fourth-inning double giving Kansas City its first baserunner.
Tigers 7, White Sox 6 (10 innings)
Carson Kelly had three hits, including the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning, and Mark Canha finished a triple short of the cycle to lift visiting Detroit to a win against Chicago.
Canha drove in three runs, while Kelly had two RBIs as Detroit collected 12 hits. The Tigers overcame a big day from White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr., who was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Shelby Miller (1-0) retired the final six White Sox in order to pick up the win for Detroit. Deivi Garcia (0-1) struck out two in the 10th but allowed the inherited, extra-inning runner to score on Kelly’s single.
Rays 5, Blue Jays 1
Zack Littell pitched six shutout innings and Randy Arozarena hit his first home run of the season as Tampa Bay beat visiting Toronto in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Littell (1-0) limited the Blue Jays to four hits and tallied six strikeouts against two walks to notch his first career win over Toronto in four appearances. Arozarena finished 2-for-3 and put Tampa Bay ahead 2-0 in the fifth inning with an opposite-field solo shot off of Blue Jays starter Yusei Kikuchi. Arozarena stole two bases and scored three runs, while Amed Rosario went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Rays. Jose Caballero collected two hits and two RBIs.
Ernie Clement’s two hits led Toronto, which was outhit 11-6.
Brewers 7, Mets 6
Rhys Hoskins hit a home run and finished with four RBIs as Milwaukee staved off a late comeback by host New York.
Hoskins singled in two runs in the first and hit a two-run bomb in the third. Mets reliever Yohan Ramirez was ejected for throwing a pitch behind Hoskins in the seventh. Hoskins and New York second baseman Jeff McNeil exchanged words and both bullpens and benches spilled onto the field Friday following Hoskins’ hard slide in the eighth inning. Elvis Peguero (1-0) tossed two perfect innings in relief.
Francisco Alvarez homered in the second for the Mets and laced an RBI single in the third. Brett Baty hit a three-run pinch-hit homer in the eighth for the Mets and Pete Alonso got New York within a run with a solo shot in the ninth. Starter Luis Severino (0-1) allowed six runs on 12 hits while striking out six over five innings.
Guardians 12, Athletics 3
San Francisco Bay Area native Steven Kwan hit his first career home run in Oakland and Gabriel Arias collected two hits, two runs and two RBIs in his first start of the season in Cleveland’s victory.
Kwan, who was playing his eighth career game at the Oakland Coliseum, went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs for the Guardians, who improved to 3-0. Nick Sandlin (1-0), who pitched a hitless fifth with two strikeouts, was credited with the win.
A’s starter JP Sears (0-1) was charged with five runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one. Zack Gelof had a single, double and stolen base for the A’s.
Nationals 7, Reds 6
Keibert Ruiz homered in the eighth and drove in the tying run in the ninth when he was hit by a pitch as Washington rallied for three runs to beat host Cincinnati.
For the second time in as many games, Nick Martini was poised to play the role of hero, connecting for a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning off Hunter Harvey (1-0) to put Cincinnati up 6-4. But Reds closer Alexis Diaz (0-1) couldn’t hold the lead and retired just one batter.
Kyle Finnegan pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save and close out Washington’s first win. Jeimer Candelario homered for the first time in a Cincinnati uniform while Luke Maile added a two-run shot for the Reds.
Rangers 11, Cubs 2
Jared Walsh, Adolis Garcia and Josh Jung each belted a two-run homer to propel Texas past Chicago in Arlington, Texas.
Corey Seager had a pair of RBI singles to highlight his four-hit performance for the Rangers, who were presented with their World Series rings during an on-field ceremony before the game. Walsh had three hits and scored three runs.
Cody Bradford (1-0) worked around Dansby Swanson’s two-run homer in the second inning to fluster the Cubs. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out six and walked one in five innings. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks (0-1) lasted only 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits.
Giants 9, Padres 6
Jordan Hicks fired five scoreless innings, Michael Conforto blasted a grand slam to cap a six-run eighth inning and San Francisco held off host San Diego for its second straight win.
Making his first start in nearly two calendar years, Hicks (1-0) allowed just three hits and a walk, fanning six. Four relievers finished up as San Francisco assured itself of no worse than a series split to open the season.
In his San Diego debut, Dylan Cease (0-1) lasted 4 2/3 innings and 85 pitches, permitting two hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He walked two and struck out six. The Padres trailed 9-1 going into the ninth, but Eguy Rosario belted a two-run homer, followed by a three-run blast from Graham Pauley, his first career homer.
Rockies 9, Diamondbacks 4
Charlie Blackmon smacked a two-run double and Nolan Jones added a two-run triple during a five-run fifth inning to help Colorado beat Arizona in Phoenix, giving the Rockies their first win of the season.
Ezequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle each hit two-run homers for the Rockies, who was outscored 23-4 while losing the first two contests of the four-game set that concludes Sunday and is just 4-12 against the Diamondbacks since the start of last season.
Peter Lambert (1-0) retired three batters — including the final out of the fifth — while allowing one hit and walking two for the Rockies. Starter Austin Gomber gave up four runs on six hits in 4 2/2 innings.
Cardinals 6, Dodgers 5 (10 innings)
Paul Goldschmidt delivered an RBI groundout in the 10th inning as visiting St. Louis capitalized on a gift five-run seventh inning and then held on for their first win of the season in a victory over Los Angeles.
Goldschmidt’s one-out slow roller to shortstop scored automatic runner Victor Scott II as the Cardinals outlasted the Dodgers and a rare Dodger Stadium rain delay that lasted 35 minutes following the fourth inning.
The Dodgers nearly won the game in the ninth before leaving the game-winning run at third when Teoscar Hernandez struck out. Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, the Dodgers started their rally with a one-out homer by Mookie Betts to cut their deficit to 5-4. Freddie Freeman and Will Smith singled before Max Muncy tied it 5-5 on a two-out bloop single.
Pirates 9, Marlins 3
Jared Jones struck out 10 in his major league debut and Pittsburgh banged out 16 hits in beating host Miami for its first 3-0 start since 2018.
Pirates leadoff man Connor Joe, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs, was in the middle of much of the offensive damage. Bryan Reynolds doubled in two runs. Jones (1-0), a 22-year-old right-hander, gave up three hits, walked two and allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings in his sparkling debut.
Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers (0-1) worked four innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out five. Jesus Sanchez had two hits and two RBIs for Miami.
