The Michigan Wolverines football program reportedly isn’t wasting any time replacing legendary head coach Jim Harbaugh who was hired Wednesday to be the next Los Angeles Chargers head coach.

According to college football insider Brett McMurphy, Michigan is expected to promote current offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to head coach in Ann Arbor.

“It’s 99.9 (percent),” a source told McMurphy. “It’s Sherrone’s job to lose.” Moore was UM’s acting head coach for 4 wins this year during Jim Harbaugh’s suspensions.”

This always seemed to make the most sense. Moore, 37, joined the Michigan Wolverines back in 2018 as their tight ends coach. He was then promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2021 before being full-time OC this past season. The Wolverines’ offense exploded under Moore in comparison to past seasons.

  • Michigan Wolverines offense 2023: 36 points per game (12th), 6.0 yards per play (34th), 44.8% third-down conversion rate (22nd), 4.1 red-zone scoring attempts per game (34th)

This played a major role in Michigan earning the national championship with quarterback J.J. McCarthy improving leaps and bounds.

With both play-calling experience and boasting a background on the offensive line, Moore should be a natural transition for Michigan. The program obviously figured so, too, making this decision in such a timely fashion.
