Marquette guard D.J. Carton has declared for the NBA draft and will forego his remaining eligibility, the school announced.

Carton averaged 13.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 27 games (24 starts) with Marquette as a sophomore in 2020-21. He transferred to the Golden Eagles after spending his freshman season at Ohio State, where he averaged 10.4 points, 3.0 assists and 2.8 rebounds.

“I would like to thank Marquette University, Coach Smart and my teammates for their support throughout my decision process,” Carton said. “I will be putting my name in for consideration in the 2021 NBA Draft and hiring an agent. I am thankful for the opportunity and looking forward to the next step in my career.”

Head coach Shaka Smart, who recently took over at Marquette after leaving Texas, issued a statement in support of Carton.

“We fully support D.J.’s decision and wish him all the best as he pursues his professional career,” Smart said. “We have enjoyed getting to know him over the past few weeks and we appreciate his contributions to the program.”
